Dear furnace, Ontario wants approval before you go
We are a private heat pump installer. We are not the government, and this page does not speak for it. We explain the rebates and link to the people who run them. Updated October 22, 2026.
What you can stack in Ontario today
Today Ontario homes can look at the Home Renovation Savings Program: for electric, oil, propane or wood heat, cold-climate air source $1,250/ton, up to $7,500. The federal rebate, a grant of either $2,000 or up to $10,000 (for low- to median-income households), is still pending. Estimate, not guaranteed. Last checked October 22, 2026.

Before you install
Ontario first. This is the official wording, read October 22, 2026:
"Important: Pre-approval is mandatory. Installations done before approval are not eligible for rebates."
In plain words, the order is this:
- Fill in the eligibility form.
- A participating HVAC contractor submits the pre-installation application.
- Install only after approval.
So a heat pump that goes in early can cost you the Ontario rebate. Homes are houses only. New builds are out. Source: Home Renovation Savings.
Now the federal part. Canada has published the rule below, and it is conditional. Criteria, the eligible heat pump list and rebate amounts are published only "as of November 1, 2026".
"Although the Rebate does not open until early 2027, the retroactivity period for the National Heat Pump Rebate starts on November 1, 2026. This means that households that meet the program's eligibility criteria and install eligible heat pumps starting on November 1, 2026, will be able to apply for the Rebate once the program launches early in 2027."

Nobody has seen those criteria yet. We cannot tell you your home or your heat pump will qualify. Check the rules on November 1, 2026 before you book anything.
Landlords and investors
- You must own the home. "Where an owner has tenants, the owner must apply."
- Owners can apply for each property they own. Apartments are not an eligible home type.
- Energy Affordability Program: in electric-heated homes, owners and renters may apply. In oil-heated homes, owners only.
- Federal rebate: canada.ca does not say yet whether rentals qualify. We will update this page when it does.
Renting the unit, not renting out a home. The Home Renovation Savings page also has a row for people who rent the heat pump itself from a company: cold-climate air source "$500/ton", "Up to $2,000" back; ground source "$3,000" back. "Eligible for electric, natural gas, oil, propane and wood primary heating sources." Estimate, not guaranteed. Last checked October 22, 2026. Official page
What to do before 2027
- Read your province's rules before you book. Ontario's come first, above.
- Get the Ontario approval before any work starts.
- Keep your paperwork. A sensible set is the invoice, the model number and a photo of the old system. The federal paperwork rules are not published yet.
- Join the waitlist. We will tell you when the federal rules land.
The full order of steps is on how to apply.
