A heat pump rebate in Alberta: what exists today, and what is on its way
Is there a heat pump rebate in Alberta?
Not from the province, as far as we could find on October 22, 2026, and no Alberta city program is confirmed either. What is coming is federal: a grant of either $2,000 or up to $10,000 (for low- to median-income households), still pending. Estimate, not guaranteed. Program page
We are a private heat pump installer, not the government. We explain programs and do not run them.

Who can claim a heat pump rebate in Alberta?
Today, nobody can claim a provincial one, because we found none. The federal rebate decides most of the Alberta picture, and its rules are not out yet.
- Income threshold: not published until November 1, 2026.
- Eligible heat pump list: not published until November 1, 2026.
- Landlords and rentals: no federal answer yet.
- Applications: the portal opens in early 2027.
So the honest answer to "how do I apply" is this. Not yet. Join the waitlist, and we will update this page when the rules land.
Greener Homes Grant in Alberta: what replaced it
The Canada Greener Homes Grant stopped taking applications in February 2024. Its documents were due by December 31, 2025. It is history now, not an offer.
Two federal things sit in its place. The National Heat Pump Rebate is the new one, and it is pending. The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program is open only in partner provinces: Manitoba, Quebec, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Alberta is not on that list in what we read.
Do heat pumps work in an Alberta winter?
Cold climate models are built for this. Natural Resources Canada says cold climate air source heat pumps can operate when outdoor air is as cold as -30°C. Below that, it says supplemental heating may be required. Ordinary air source units may need backup heat once it drops to between -10°C and -15°C.
For Alberta, that means two things. Ask for a cold climate model, not a standard one. And ask your installer what backup you would keep for the coldest nights.
Before you install
Alberta has no provincial gate that we found. The gate is federal.
The retroactivity period for the National Heat Pump Rebate starts on November 1, 2026. Households that meet the program's eligibility criteria and install eligible heat pumps starting on November 1, 2026 will be able to apply once the program launches early in 2027. The criteria, the eligible list and the rebate amounts are published only as of November 1, 2026. Source: canada.ca, read October 22, 2026.
Check any city program page before you book. Nobody can promise a federal outcome yet. That includes us.
Landlords and investors
Alberta has no provincial landlord rule, because it has no provincial rebate. The federal rebate has not stated a landlord answer. We will add it after November 1. Equipment leases are a separate thing: leasing a unit is not owning a rental.
What to do before 2027
Collect your heating bills and get quotes for cold climate models. Then read how to apply for the full order. If you install after November 1, 2026, keep every invoice for a federal claim, subject to the conditions above.
